Energy Saving Tips
Energy Efficiency For Your Home
Saving energy isn't complicated.
Making small changes can improve your comfort and environment, and even save you money.
No matter what age or household size, these practical tips can help you reduce your energy use and stay warm at home.
Heating & Hot Water
- Turn down your thermostat by 1–2°C — even small reductions save energy.
- Turn off radiators in unused rooms and close the door.
- Don't block radiators with furniture or curtains.
- Use a shower timer and low-flow showerheads to save hot water.
- Only making 1 mug of tea? Boil just enough for that cup.
Electricity & Appliances
- Turn off lights and appliances when not in use. Avoid the red standby light.
- Unplug chargers and small appliances — they still use electricity when plugged in.
- Replace expired light bulbs and appliances with high-efficiency LEDs and higher-energy ratings.
- Wash clothes at 30–40°C instead of higher temperatures.
- Use a clothes horse to dry indoors instead of of using a radiator or tumble dryer.
Windows, Doors & Insulation
- Close doors to keep heat in and draughts out.
- Use thick curtains or thermal blinds at night.
- Seal gaps around windows, doors, and letterboxes to reduce heat loss.
- Add loft or wall insulation if possible — small investments can save a lot in the long term.
Smart & Affordable Tips
- Use timers or smart plugs to control appliances and reduce wasted electricity.
- Cook efficiently: cover pans, use lids, and match pan size to hob.
- Take advantage of natural heat: open curtains during the day for sunlight warmth, close at night.
- Check your energy use on your meter regularly to track savings.
